From the Back Cover

The Herdmans are the worst kids in the history of the world. They lie, steal, smoke cigars, swear, and hit little kids. So no one is prepared when this outlaw family invades church one Sunday and decides to take over the annual Christmas pageant.None of the Herdmans has ever heard the Christmas story before. Their interpretation of the tale -- the Wise Men are a bunch of dirty spies and Herod needs a good beating -- has a lot of people up in arms. But it will make this year's pageant the most unusual anyone has seen and, just possibly, the best one ever.

In the first 30 minutes of the audio book no child or adult laughed or even smiled once. There was nothing funny or even amusing. We then had to answer children's questions about justified pyromania (is that possible?), looking down on "poor" people badly because they don't have much money, bullying (two times), inept/lazy police officers, animal abuse/torture and how teachers can hate students and promote them simply to get rid of them. Teachers apparently don't care about the welfare of any of their students just their own inconvenience of having students that misbehave or may have learning difficulties. As the author tells us, we should wish that bad things happen to any child who is poor, has behavioral problems, learns slowly and/or has unfit parents...at least until we show up and "save" them.It doesn't matter how the book ends...the basic premise is way off base. We all (children included) ended up despising the author, Barbara Robinson. Why should we look down on that family and judge them so much?Maybe the worst thing we can say about this book was that is was simply unfunny (not even amusing) and a hate-filled bore of a story. There are so many other children's books similar to this book that are funny, have children that do some crazy or even mean things, don't make the reader so self-righteous and still show some level of compassion throughout. Ex: Junie B. Jones, Tales of a 4th Grade Nothing, etc.

There’s a lot of wisdom in this little book. So many of us were raised in a church with the same Christmas pageant every year, not questioning what each of the real people in the story was really dealing with. One pastor once said that you know angels must be terrifying because their appearance in the Bible is usually followed by “fear not” and “get up”. That’s how I think Gladys Herdman got it right in this book, as a bullying girl yelling “Hey! Unto you a child is born!”

This book is always wonderful to read. It is a good reminder that we often lose Christmas in the busy traditions. Just as the Christmas Pageant was messy and anything but ordinary so was the first Christmas so long ago. Even though it is a humorous story, it subtly redirects you to think and reconsider the amazing truth that Jesus really did choose to enter earth as a baby. This book is worth reading over and over.

We heard about this book last week and it sounded great. It’s a children’s chapter book, but I think the story is wonderful for all ages. A lot of us grew up being taught about Christmas and the birth of Jesus- but what would about those who know nothing about it? The Herdman kids were trouble makers who went to church one week for the snacks. Then they join the Christmas Pageant, the play that shows the story of the night Jesus was born. Their perspective sheds new light on what could have happened, and in their opinion, what should have happened. I laughed a lot, and by the end I was crying at the innocent love of these kids.#TheBestChristmasPageantEver #NoRoomAtTheInn #christmas

OMG this was coming as a holiday live play locally at Christmas time. I bought the book and started reading it aloud at breakfast on Saturday. Took a break and continued to read another third Saturday afternoon. Finished the story reading aloud at bedtime. When we got to the play the next afternoon the 9 yr old twins were anticipating each scene. They were alert, attentive and actually became critics pointing out the skipped or inserted lines, as the play was adapted from the book and not verbatim. What a great story - great telling of the birth of Jesus, and keeps the kids' attention because of the uniquely crafted kid characters.

I was sitting in class (seminary) one day and we were discussing the angle of the Lord. I couldn't help but shout out, SHAZAM! People around me looked like I was nuts, until I explained that it was from a great children's book. Since then, I have had to buy a couple copies to give to friends- for them to read, enjoy, and give away or read to the children in their lives. The theology isn't perfect but when is a child's theology perfect? It is interesting to see Christmas to children who have never heard of the story/birth of Jesus. There are things that I too wondered as a kid but was too afraid to ask. Great book to use as discussion about many topics with kids and not just about religion. With so much talk about bullying, this book can lead to many open discussions about the bullies in our lives.

Ronan O'Connellthe book takes place at the herd mans house and the church. the book is about a Christmas pageant at thechurch. Herd mans are very bad kids who smoked and said bad words. the only reason that the herd mans were even interested in church is because one of them herd that you get food there like chocolate cake but they do not get snacks at ccd the kid was just lying to sound cool to the herd mans witch did not work because the herd mans wanted to join the church so they did then they were in the Christmas pageant and the problem was that all the kids and adults thought that they were going to ruin the Christmas pageant. But in the end they did not ruin it and it turned out to be okay. overall I really liked the book and I would recommend it.

This is a wonderful chapter book we read as a family (kids aged 13, 11, 6, 4, and 2)each Christmas. It's only 7 chapters though they are fairly long. It tells the story of the horrible Herdman children and how they learn about the story of Christmas and help others feel the real spirit of the season by participating in the local church's Christmas pagent. We all find ourselves laughing out loud throughout the story and I (being Mom) always cry at the end though there is still plenty of laughs. Despite the use of the taking of the Lord's name in vain twice (by the Herdmans and immediently frowned upon by the others), I don't think there is another book so funny and enjoyable that teaches so many wonderful life lessons and brings in the real meaning of Christmas than The Best Christmas Pagent Ever.
