I have used DK Eyewitness books, Rick Steeves book and Lonely Planet books. DK consistantly wins out.For my first time Paris trip and upon the urging of family, I also bought Frommer's and Fodor's. I didn't buy Rick Steeves for this trip. DK was hands down more informative than Fodor's or Frommer's, gave easier to follow instructions, gave more history, and had beautiful illustrations. The kinda 3-D street maps really help finding your way around. Here in the States streets are streets. In Paris a street might be what we would call an alley only big enough for one car. This difference makes a map showing uniformed sizes "streets" with no illustrations of them hard to follow. DK shows the size of the streets, drawings of the buildings are on the corners and so on. This makes it so much easier to not get lost, which I do inspite of google maps. It also lists the cathedrals in order of age which made me look at the buildings more deeply and compare the different architecture.In contrast, the Fodor's and Frommer's directions were not as easy to follow. Also, they were almost 50% advertisement for hotels and restaurants rather than concentrating on the sites to see.Like other reviewers do, I am keeping my DK Paris to look through to re-enjoy my trip to Paris.
Great planning guide for Paris, Found all the info I needed in one spot, and really helped me plan my itinerary. I will be using valuable luggage space to take this with me on the plane, so I can make the most out of my trip. I can't imagine planning this trip without all the information, and it has a plastic folding map as well. Very well organized, up to date, and lets you search by area. Lots of things in here you wont see in the tourist brochures. Highly recommend.
Fantastic book! Just like walking along the streets in Paris. Very descriptive, useful, practical. It is just what an unexperienced traveler needs.
This is a great book. I had the 2014 version and I used it to plan a trip to Paris in 2014. We had a great trip and this book was a fantastic resource. Right now I'm planning another trip to Paris for late in 2018 and I bought the updated 2018 version of the same book. The book breaks the city into districts to make it easier to understand, and the way the book uses diagrams and 3D maps of the streets makes it a pleasure to read.
Got this guide for my recent trip to Paris, since my previous guide was several years old. Found quite a few errors (maps and text). Some stuff is outdated. Makes me think they don't really check, just do a quick reprint. Should have just used my old book for that matter. There were times when i wouldn't go on a trip without a DK guide. Now I may consider to use the phone apps instead.
I am so glad I ponied up the money and purchased this book. The photos and maps as well as the thorough descriptions make this my go-to book while I plan my trip to Paris. I would highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to find attractions other than the 'top 10' and get bogged down in tourist traps.
I love the DK Travel books as they cover everything in a condensed manner but include all the basic information. My previous DK Paris was very old & somewhat outdated so I bought the most recent edition to replace it.
We bought Paris and London. These books are great. Wonderful tips, maps, culture support including commonly used words. Ideas for walking tours, area tours, and tourist visits. We would go through the books every morning before we left our hotel for the day. I passed them on to my daughter.
