Disturbing. Couldn't get past the rape of the boyfriend, in which the girlfriend watches and has zero reaction except to be turned on by the leader of the attackers, suddenly desiring him for herself? When she returns home with her boyfriend, he graphically and forcefully demands sex with her and all she can think is "finally! I've been hoping for a change like this in him!" (my paraphrase) I was disturbed by the initial chapters and promptly deleted it from my Kindle.
These characters are certainly different from what I've read in the re: paranormal but not by much. It's just more in depth with their sensual nature and preferences. The second book will ease your mind on the "rape" scenario, I think. The fact that both characters feel an extremely strong sexual pull towards each other, sex was inevitable no matter what form it took. In the book the hero was surprised the heroine didn't remember it happening. She thought it was a dream based on her fantasy until he told her about it with great shame. She was happy it wasn't a dream and the story moves on. I guess it takes a certain open mindedness and preferences to like this book. If you don't like rough sex, gay scenes, mind control, pain, death in battle...then this series is not for you. However, if you like hot sexy alpha's, a strong and funny heroine, more hot side characters, and very well written and engaging dialogue! Then give this series a go. This entertained me like Kresley Cole...and JR Ward books.I'm up to book five and haven't been bored yet.Lots of action, drama, love and humor all rolled into one. Fantastic character developments also. Did I mention fast paced? Yeah that too. Give it a go.
I don't know why I even read this book, I wanted to end it after the first 3 pages. This story was awful because it was full of the vampire type characters who released Pheromones to get anyone to sleep with them. In the very beginning there was guy and guy action with the main character's boyfriend, The whole book was like one giant orgy and was full of these people raping whom ever they want whether is is a guy or a girl, they didn't care. The main character was the best of them all, I liked her because she was strong and determined to protect her friends and loved ones. She felt and instant pull toward Stephan who feels the same and tries to stay away but he can't. When she was unconscious from a near death experience he rapes her, in a sense. I really will not finish this series and am appalled that people actually enjoy this kind of crap. I guess if they wants a shock factor in their books than this is the right one. FYI it's takes a lot for me to give a book 1 star.
This book seems typical of many first books in a series--it's a bit slow while laying the foundation for the rest of the series. There are some fresh ideas whether it's upending the folklore of vampires or weaving magic into these supernatural beings. The sexual content may catch some readers by surprise and may even chase a few readers away, but in context for the world and character building it becomes an understandable and necessary part of the story. The lead characters diverge enough to keep them unique. Stephan seems to have some inner demons and a bit of mystery surrounding him. Sasha is a bit immature and naive, but seems to be on a trajectory to grow. Charles is an interesting side-kick whose conflict of physical age versus mental/emotional age is well done--yes he acts like the teenage boy he is even though by human standards he's a man. The audiobook is well done and a good addition to the ebook. Readers who don't mind raunchy, snarky, and funny stories or characters will enjoy this book. Readers who prefer less racy novels may be better off looking for a different book.
The author is unapologetic about pushing the boundaries beyond the standard paranormal romance set-up. Every chapter is filled with surprises and turns, that the cut-and-paste formula of other paranormal romances doesn't fit into. In this sense, it's very fresh and entertaining. You will not find another paranormal romance like it. I went into this book with the mindset of being entertained, and I was entertained very much from this book to the final book in the series. Another reviewer had it exactly right: this book is "not for the the faint of heart or narrow of mind, K. F. Breene weaves a sexy, snarky tale of magical mayhem." And mayhem it is, including of the sexual variety. There were many pleasant and surprising moments of "wait, what? is this really happening? are we really going there?" Some of the moments were originally beyond the more vanilla levels of other paranormal romances, and this book specializes in surprises. Most of all, I love the heroine. Think the exact opposite of Bella Swan. She has deeper insecurities and obvious flaws but her wit is just off the charts, and her snarky tongue always left me laughing. She felt very human to me. Hell, she reminded me of myself and my constantly running inner dialogue. While the negative ratings on this site have valid and serious points, I admit this series (starting with this book) has still turned out to be "the" most entertaining rides I've had the pleasure of experiencing in the world of paranormal romance, because it did push the envelope. While this isn't my favorite book in the series (they get much better moving forward), I still regard it as one of my favorite books of all time. I go back and read it often (when my kindle budget has run dry for the month). The grammar and rape of this book isn't nearly as bad as the more negative reviews make it seem. So yes, this book has some literary errors (what FREE paranormal romance doesn't) so if you're personally offended by the occasion misuse of the English language, maybe this book isn't for you. The errors are primarily cases where an improper spelling variation of the word is used, typically of the variety that only English majors or literary fanatics would find off putting.[Spoiler alert] And yes, rape is wrong. Very wrong. And sex without consent is rape. That said, the heroine and her destined alpha have their first sexual encounter together in which he is fully alert, and she believes that she's dreaming. She's does, in fact, direct and encourage his efforts him throughout the entire process, but like I said, she thinks she's dreaming and continues to think it was only a dream for some time after. I realize this crosses some hazy lines about what is consent, and viewers should read at their discretion and to their own comfort level. The scene registered a little on my creep-meter, but in my own personal experience, I didn't find it that disturbing. I certainly didn't slam the book down, point my finger at it, and accuse the male of raping the heroine. As I have read the whole series, I can assure you that the situation doesn't repeat itself. Everyone is very much not on their death-bed for the remainder of the sex scenes.
