She has written more than 70 documentary programs for public radio including the 52-part native music series, Oyate Ta Olowan–The Songs of the People. I received this book from Jamie Lee at a writing workshop. I have received no compensation for my review.I read Washaka the Bear Dreamer in one sitting. I have been an avid reader all my life (started at 4) and never had a "favorites" list until about 2 years ago when Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer made me realize I needed a Top 5. This book has become the third book to join the list, along with Wendell Berry's Hannah Coulter. It seems the books on my list are all about life lessons explained in story, about how to be compassionate and whole people, about how we treat others and why it is important, and about how we listen to the Earth. This book astounded me in so many ways. The story is beautifully told, unfolding with concisely written details that nonetheless leave you with a full and beautiful vision of the surroundings in which you are immersed. The characters have wonderful personality and the stories of Native ways show the gentle and giving nature of the Lakota people. I highly recommend this book for all ages. ~Jami Gaither
Jamie Lee's first novel tells a timeless story whose time has come, a "seventh generation" tale and wisdom teaching, eloquently and intuitively woven, based on a dream told to her by a Lakota friend, Leon Hale. Beautifully researched and well-crafted, the story chronicles a profound friendship between a young Lakota boy and a white settler's son in 1800's Dakota Territory. Little Chief dreams of a white bear tied to a tree, neck bleeding, growling in pain. Regarding the dream, his Grandfather tells Little Chief that he must free this Mato Ska, but that the white bear may represent something else. "It is so, Little Chief. We must act on such a dream. How can we not?" instructs Grandfather, who also tells Little Chief that he must wait until he is stronger and has taken responsibility for learning Lakota ways--the making and use of a bow, the capture and training of a horse, his first buffalo kill. He must learn to listen and not interrupt, to show respect for his elders, and learn to dismiss jealousy and fear--all these lessons will make him stronger, or, Washaka.When Little Chief discovers a white boy tied to a tree, bleeding at the neck, having been beaten and tied up by his father, he recognizes his dream's white bear. What unfolds as each boy learns from the other, and more important, as they learn to trust their common humanity and instincts, has repercussions for all cultures, all tribes, and in these times, all nations. Young adults to elders will value this book.
Washaka--The Bear Dreamer, may well be the best American Indian-related book of 2006! This energetic, poignant tale of Little Chief, a boy of the Lakotas, and his efforts to find and free Mato Ska, the "white bear" of his visions, draws past time and race, shares history and legend. The friendship forged between the young Lakota boy of the mid-nineteenth century and the mistreated son of a white settler--Little Chief's Mato Ska--will keep you turning pages. I recommend this wonderful book to anyone who wants a good read--middle reader through adult. Washaka will touch your heart and spirit!
This book really drew me in, reading while the kids got ready for school, while supper was cooking, before bed, anytime there was more then a few minutes free. Finally, I threw myself on the couch and let the world spin around me while I read the last 60 pages. I couldn't put it down. It was one story that I truly didn't know the end 10 pages prior to it happening. I cried, it was sad. It wasn't supposed to happen that way. But yet it was such a beautiful spiritual 'scene'. (that is not the word I want but it wasn't an ending either). To be so connected with both worlds and not at the same time - is something I always believed death would be (& hoped) but never read it with such clarity.Thanks for the wonderful story! It is one of those books that once finished you sit back to take it all in again, while the characters slowly fade. The story and characters were all so vivid, it was like I was there, sitting on the big boulder looking down on the village myself. I want to keep sitting there, but like all good things, reality jumps in and we all know how it ended. We are coming around to that 7th generation, but not yet.
This most amazing novel actually takes the reader to a different and extraordinary reality: life in a Lakota tribe before the Europeans arrived and changed their lives. The narrator, a Lakota tribesman, brings us clearly, humanly, and powerfully into his life--and we see and hear and understand its reality. The author has the genius to make the narrator so real that his story of his life, from his boyhood through his growing up, makes it possible for the reader to actually be there, see what's there, understand what's there--the place, the people, the reality. It's an extraordinary experience! It's a magic carpet ride to another world, a world so fully evoked that its values, relationships, realities--from initiation experiences to spiritually enriching interactions with the wise Elders--are life-changing.I have never read a novel that so transported me to--and into--another reality as this one does. Now I understand what it was like to have grown up then in a Lakota tribe--and as a result, I deeply mourn the wisdom and beauty that has been lost. I thank the author and the Lakota man whose dream inspired her writing this novel for opening our eyes and hearts and souls to this reality.
I was charmed by this book. It is a very engaging and pleasurable read that provides much insight into the ways of Lakota Indian culture and values. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and I know for sure that others will too.
This is an all time favorite of mine, I could not put it down until I read it cover to cover. I would have loved to read this book to my children at night when they were growing up. Reading one chapter each night to a child would give them time to think over what was happening and they would be eager for bed time the next night to see what happened next. Thanks to Jaime for listening to a man's dream and writing it so well, and to him for him for sharing the dream. Don't miss this book.
