I have suffered from GERD/acid reflux for many years. This book was excellent in summarizing all the phases one goes through from why acid reflux occurs, to diagnosis and treatment. It is a short read at only fifty pages, but it is filled with helpful information and a few case histories of people suffering from GERD.It was the first time I ever heard of an esophageal manometry, which I finally had and was able to be accurately diagnosed, and proof that I was having swallowing problems.
Good book on understanding Acid Reflux
As a longtime GERD sufferer and one who has done every ill-advised activity described in this book I offer a few observations on the quick read. First I wish this had been published years ago. Dr. Lamont has done an outstanding job of refining the tedious medical terminology down to a layman's level. This is one of the primary advantages of this publication - plain English discussions about GERD and heartburn (HB) in general. The publication contains understandable explanations and descriptions of the digestive system and components that are involved in GERD and HB coupled with an excellent discussion of the causes and triggers for both and provides an extensive write-up on what can be done and if they should be done. The author uses four case studies that detail the many faces of GERD and HB, meds that are used, the effectiveness of one over the other, surgeries that can be employed, and effective alternatives to surgery. In addition to the why of GERD and HB he discusses diagnosis and treatment of both. The book covers when meds should be taken (time of day), when surgery should be considered, alternatives such as LINX device ( a magnetic esophagus wrap around), as well as the advantages and disadvantages of both. There is an excellent glossary, resources section, and a comprehensive index. I have learned more about my condition by reading this book than I ever learned from my physician. If you suffer from HB or GERD you need this publication. If you're going to your physician with stomach acid problems this book will help arm you and provide you with the knowledge and ammunition you need to deal with your issue. This book is wonderful.
For a short book intended to explain gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in 30 minutes, I think this book will be a good choice for many readers. It does a fine job explaining the relevant anatomy and physiology, the diagnosis process, and possible treatments in a very understandable way.I was pleased that the author, who is both a practicing gastroenterologist as well as a Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, acknowledges that the real cause of reflux is dysfunction of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). Basically, the group of muscles at the top of the stomach is, for whatever reason, unable to prevent the stomach’s contents from rising up into the esophagus. He also discusses some diet and lifestyle interventions that can be used to prevent or reduce mild to moderate cases of reflux. And I was delighted to read about the LINX device under surgical interventions; I was not familiar with that option and I think it may be a very good alternative for those who cannot control their reflux with more conservative measures. However, I was disappointed that he did not mention more of the diet changes and nutritional supplements that can be helpful. I felt that there was a little too much emphasis on acid-reducing medications, which can have a lot of negative effects, particularly when used long-term. But again, Dr. Lamont acknowledges that the medications are not without risk and shouldn't be taken long-term except under the guidance of a physician, and I think his choice of what to include was fairly well done considering the brevity of this book. It is intended to provide basic information and reassurance to those who are dealing with GERD and to make it easier for them to discuss the condition and potential treatments with their doctors, and I think in that regard it is likely to be a success. The book was very neatly formatted. I really appreciated the graphs and charts included, which I found easy to view on my small tablet. The text is logically organized, technical terms are clearly explained, and I didn't notice any significant editing problems.I was provided with a free copy of this book from the publisher and volunteered to provide an honest review.
Great book. The I individual stories of the different way GERD presents itself is good and informative. The suggestions for trying to handle through certain foods is always a winner as none of us want to take medicine if we don't have to. The information is on a level that I could understand and apply. A wealth of information and a glossary. A definite add to anyone's library.
