"That Oakley I can handle. But this one? The one who smolders at me and writes me apology songs? I’m so out of my element here."I first fell in love with the Erin Watt writing duo when they gave us The Royals, and that completely ruined me! So, when I found out they were writing a standalone YA together I was ecstatic! Of course, I was worried that I would compare the two series but I didn't, and I'm glad I didn't because they're completely different but, both equally amazing.Oakley Ford is a pop star who became famous at the young age of 14. He needs a fake girlfriend to keep up his failing reputation, because now that he's 19 he's turned into quite the heartthrob. He's done this whole fake girlfriend thing before, but it failed miserably so of course he's somewhat apprehensive. This is where Vaughn Bennett comes in. Her sister, Paisley works for his management team and Vaughn's picture is spotted at her desk, and just like that, a new fake girlfriend plan is hatched. Vaughn's parents died when she was 15 and left behind her younger twin brothers and older sister. So, she needs money to take care of her family, so she agrees, apprehensively, just like Oakley did."I wanted to know what it felt like to be her, and the only way I knew how to do that was to put my mouth against hers."This reads like a movie, like a cute, sexy teenage romance. This isn't a frenemy to lover’s trope, but it definitely felt like it at times. It's not too heavy, but there are some deep hidden feelings that plague both characters. The character development is great as well, because you really get a sense of who Oakley Ford and Vaughn Bennett are before they were thrust into this crazy superficial contract. And you learn even more about their backgrounds and where they come from as they go on this journey together. You really get a sense that Oakley wants to break out of this role of being a pop star and wants to be recognized as a real human being. And Vaughn gave that to him, she ends up being his muse, his passion, and everything he ever wanted. Oakley just wants to be normal, do normal things that people his age do. Fall in love the way his peers do. And he sees that in Vaughn. His manager and PR people see it differently though, and that's where it gets messy.“The good ones put your character to the flame and burn away all the rest of the shit until you come out a better you. She’s one of the good ones.”The chemistry between V and Oakley is great, and I loved how their young love was strained and angsty at times. They also have the cutest banter ever, and the little things that Oak would do for her like giving her a tiramisu recipe, and all he wanted was to give her "shivers". These two are seriously the cutest ever, and I totally fell in love with them.

About halfway through this book, the characters lose their voice and their personalities. I don't know if this is the Harlequin editor intruding on the text, ham-handedly changing the authors' words, and misunderstanding the characters, or if this is the way it goes when a book is written by two people -- you write the first half, I'll take the second half. In any case, what I liked about the beginning of the book -- contemporary characters who sound like American teenagers -- disappears. I love the way, in the first half, W refers to attractive college girls as "dimes". In the second half, W abruptly becomes horribly, inexplicably nasty to the girl he dated for two years. The main character (Vaughn) inexplicably kisses a 25YO man (not the boyfriend) and blames it on being drunk (also an anomaly). She has more integrity than to break pattern and be so hurtful and reckless. In the first half, Vaughn has been cooking dinner and taking care of her 14YO twin brothers, but in the second half her girlfriend duties require her (apparently) to abandon the boys to fend for themselves (her older sister works late, they're on their own). The concept of giving a rockstar a 20th birthday party with a child party game theme (pin the tail on the donkey) is so uncool and creepy it made me cringe -- who pushed that idea through? It was an expensive book. I'm not sure whether to boycott Harlequin or these writers? Maybe both.

WOW – THIS BOOK WAS AMAZING!!I can’t stop smiling!!!!!!When It’s Real was everything I hoped for and so much more!! A rockstar romance that was slow burn, funny, feel-good and swoony!!!! It was sweet, sexy, romantic, and had my favorite ingredient – awesome banter!!I’m floored by how much I loved this book! Not only was I smiling the entire time I was reading it, I was emotionally invested in both main characters. From the very first page I was pulled into the story and I couldn’t stop thinking about it. I would love to say I finished it in one setting but I made the mistake and started the book at work – which is NEVER a good idea. So I was interrupted again and again. It should have been savored and enjoyed without INTERRUPTION!!!But OMG this book made me HAPPY! I was hoping it would. I couldn’t wait to read it and after reading the ROYALS series I knew ERIN WATT could deliver.I loved both characters.Flawed and fascinating, they showed significant signs of growth and maturity throughout the book. And that’s such a nice change for a YA novel. Both characters but especially Oakley had such depth to draw from. It was so easy to fall for him. He was brash but also sensitive. Vulnerable under his rock star demeanor. And Vaughn was especially fascinating – sassy, strong and smart. I adored her personality. She was not afraid of going head to head with a rock star. The supporting characters were to die for. So many wonderful personalities, couples to ship, bothers to grow up – unlimited possibilities. 😀When It’s Real gave me all the feelings I was looking for. Erin Watt is a master in crafting compelling and captivating stories. The storytelling was energetic and emotional with a great amount of vibrancy. When It’s Real was the ultimate fun, sexy, feel-good, heart-warming romance and Erin Watt is without a doubt, becoming quickly one of my favorite authors.
