Review

“Tectonic Theater Project is a monumental and pioneering voice in American theater. Their work gracefully merges the political and the poetic to excavate truths about the human condition.” —Lynn Nottage, Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright  “For theater professionals, this invaluable book offers boundless inspiration as it reinvents the way in which great plays are made.  For theater enthusiasts, it offers thrilling, behind-the-scenes accounts of the birth of seminal works. . . . It is every bit as exciting as the indelible scripts the Tectonic Theater Project creates.  —Doug Wright, Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning playwright and screenwriter  “Tectonic Theater artists give us an insider’s perspective to their uniquely diverse and imaginative Moment Work process.  A powerful wake up call to artists.” —Mark Bly, former Chair, MFA Playwriting Program Yale School of Drama  “An important text for the field of devised theater-making, and theater-making in general. . . . This book invites us to interrogate how a play is made, piece by piece (or moment by moment), from initial research through to experimentation, sequencing, and composition.” —Andrew Kircher, Director, Devised Theater Initiative, The Public Theater “Moment Work has become the foundation of my devising methodology: these practices elevate the theatre maker’s ability to precisely articulate their artistic intentions, which makes for strong devisers as well as actors, directors, designers and playwrights.” —Rich Brown, Professor of Acting and Movement, Western Washington University   “I have been devising theater for over twenty years. . . . Encountering Moment Work was extremely refreshing because it introduces a crystal-clear vocabulary for creating and analyzing devised work. It should be considered the “ur” method of devising.” —Dr. Rachel Bowditch, Associate Professor at Arizona State University and author of On the Edge of Utopia

An engaging and important book about a remarkable theater company.

Moises Kaufman and his husband founded the Tectonic Theatre Company in New York City in the early nineties. They are responsible for such memorable and original play productions like "The Laramie Tragedy;" "The People's Temple;" "33 Variations;" and "I Am My Own Wife." This book is about the company's approach to devising theater; original, substantive, thought-provoking, different and unique to the audience. For theater enthusiasts, students and scholars, this book is really about how the company was formed to create an experience for the audience, cast and crew. The book's contents included "Preface;" "Introduction;" Part I: Tectonic's Antecedents, History and Approach with sections on "Antecedents" entitled "Postmodernism and Deconstruction." History and Approach with sections on "Defining Devised;" "Form and Content;" "Theatrical Narrative vs. Dramatic Narrative;" "Collaboration;" and "The Role of the Theater Artist."Part Two is entitled "The Moment Work Process." Level I is entitled "Making Moments" with sections on "Prepping the Space;" "Introducing the Elements of the Stage;" "Introducing the Moment Work Construct: I Begin/I End;" "Two-Person Moments;" "Group Moments;" "Concepts: Defining Moments and Moment Work;" "Architecture and Space Moments;" "Concepts: Tools for Change;" "Prop Moments;" "Concepts: Discursive Power, Logging and Sharing Moments;" "Costume Moments;" "Concepts: Discursive Line, Narrative, Flexibility and Layering;" "Light Moments;" "Concepts: Tension, Dynamic Change and Scoring;" "Sound Moments;" "Text Moments;" "Adding Text to Preexisting Moments: and "Some Additional Elements."Level Two is entitled "Constructing Short Narratives" with sections on "Consecutive Sequencing;" "Moment Layering;" "Context" and Additional Structural Tools."Level Three is entitled "Creating a Piece" with sections on "The Hunch;" "Source Material;" "Organizaing Principles;" Using Throughlines;" "The Plays including 'Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde;' 'The Laramie Project;' 'I Am My Own Wife;' "33 Variations;' 'One Arm;' 'The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later" and 'Uncommon Sense."Part Three is titled Essays. The essays included "What Do We Bring Into the Room? by Andy Paris; "Interview Technique, Research and Fieldwork: Muster Some Nerve and Embark" by Greg Pierotti; "A Team of Dramaturgs" by Jimmy Maize; "Writing into Form: Creating The Peoples' Temple by Leigh Fondakowski; "Brecht and The Use of the Narrator in Tectonic Plays" by Moises Kaufman" and "Devising a Moment Work Play with College Students" by Kelli Simpkins. There is an afterword, company member biographies and acknowledgements.

I enjoyed the book a lot. Tectonic is one of the most important Theatre companies in US and is very exciting reading about how they have created the work they do. Moment Work is a great tool to devise theater and it has make me a better actor, director and theater-maker.

I've been a big fan of Moisés Kaufman and the Tectonic Theater for a number of years. I first became aware of both Kaufman and the Tectonic Theater because of the Laramie Project. This book is an excellent documentation of the Kaufman's process he uses to create engaging works of theater arts. Admittedly, Kaufman's approach to creating new theatrical works is different than most, but the excellence of his productions clearly shows that the in-depth analysis of either texts (like he did in Gross Indecency) or in-depth interviewing (like the Tectonic Theater did in the creation of the Laramie Project and the follow-up Ten Years Later) works.Anyone interested in either creating art or theater history will benefit from reading this book.

Finally there is a way to peek inside the the brilliant devising process that brought us the plays The Laramie Project, Gross Indecency, and I Am My Own Wife. This book breaks the mold on traditional theater devising, allowing all the elements of the stage to contribute to the creation of a piece, from the earliest "hunch" to the final production. Moises Kaufman and Barbara Pitts McAdams generously share this nuts and bolts approach which at the least will add valuable tools to any theater-maker's toolkit and has the potential to radically reinvent theater-making in a world that increasingly demands stimulating and creative theater experiences. Accessible and clear - this book steps you through the process.
