I've been a photographer for over 40 years; 20 years as a military combat photographer and 20 years as an on-again, off-again professional photographer. It's so easy to get caught up in the everyday photographic stresses of looking for that "magic pill" or "silver bullet" that will make you a world class photographer. The never ending need for bigger and better cameras and lenses, the multitude of courses offered by supposed professionals, the photo competitions you hope will cast you into stardom, and let's not forget about social media and the need for those additive "Likes."I've seen CJ Chilver's, "A Lesser Photographer" around for many years on the Craft and Vision website. I wanted to read it, but always hesitated, questioning it's true value. After a much anticipated release of this new edition, I snapped up a copy. It's a short read. Could be consumed in one day, although it took me three. It should be titled, "Zen and The Art of Being A Lesser Photographer." For me, I found the book to have a relaxing quality to it. Yes, it says to get out there and make photographs that matter. But it also says to quit worrying about the rest of the minutia out there that is nothing more than a distraction from creating those photos that matter. If you are looking for a book on photographic technique, then look elsewhere. If you are looking for a book that will encourage you to tune out the distractions, get off your butt and go make some photography that matters, then I recommend that your read, "A Lesser Photographer." This is a book that I will read at least once a year for a little anti-BS booster shot.
One of the biggest problems with books on photographing is the way they tend to entrench the reader in convention. Even when particular authors have a unique facet to their work and perspective, it seems like you are often getting just as much bad advice as you are good advice. Chilvers bucks that trend by only writing the good stuff, with sound, often anti-establishment observations that cause the reader to meditate on facts he had thought to be a given. There's no attempt to be a fully rounded photography manual, not even to exhaust the main premise of the author's photographic style, which led to the title of the book - that of using a small compact camera for all of his work. As such it's a small book, and a quick read, but the nuggets you gain can lead to interesting thought experiments, projects and jumping off points for your own writing. Recommended!Edit, 1/14/19: I read the entirety of the book on Kindle before I received it via two-day shipping (like I said, it's short) but I am quite happy with the quality of the print book! The cover looks very cool. Not your typical self-published feel to the book.
I can recommend this book to just about any photographer. I went to university for photojournalism and art and activity take photos on a weekly basis as a documentary photographer (but not as my source of income). This book is a great reminder that more gear probably won’t make you a better photographer. It is an interesting book that is very different than most of the photography related books out there. I actually recently framed a photo that I took with a cheap point and shoot camera; the gear is not what’s important, it’s the photographer and the intent that is important.
To quote Frank Zappa, “shut up and play your guitar.†The same applies here. Don’t get caught up in gear, sharpness, Test esults, etc. just go out and make photographs. You already have all that you need.Russ
This book really hits the mark on what a photographer should stride and inspire toward in their creative journey. Thank you!
